Focus Your Focus – How to Ward Off Distraction During Your Golf Swing

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

There is a great possibility to lose your mind when playing golf simply due to the constant shifting of focus. I think the brain doesn’t like to change focus. It wants to stay in one place until the job is done, but in golf, we think about the present; the stance, and we think about the future; the shot.

The mind wants stimulation, and the stance simply doesn’t fill the bill. The shot on the other hand has hope and excitement, wondering whether the ball will go where you want it to, where it will land, and what you will need to do next.

When you set up and look downrange, your mind almost instantly locks on to the shot thoughts….and abandons the task at hand of taking the backswing and making the transition.

If you think about your daily life it works the same. It’s much easier to let your mind wonder off to the next vacation than to keep working on the mundane task of work. At times like that, you must call your brain back to work and get back to whatever task you’re doing.

To get the results of a golf swing, you have to do the same thing. Usually, just before you take the backswing, you take one more look downrange. This is the mind’s last opportunity to escape, and it often does. If you can keep the mind interested in the swing, it wouldn’t go running off to the future all of the time, but how?

This is one reason I stress visualization during the swing process. If you have a movie of the impending swing in your mind, the brain will want to hang around and see if the body followed instructions…..(it’s a power thing, the brain wants to be in charge and it thinks the body wants to take over.)

But sometimes a good picture isn’t enough. You need to remind your brain to get back to the task at hand. I do this with a trigger. I want something visual that will tell my mind, “hey, get back to the swing!” Mine is a little complicated to describe but it’s simple as a picture. When I take my backswing,as I am feeling the weight building up under my back foot, I want to feel my shoulder touch my chin and I want to see that the line across my back is behind the ball. Once I see that, I know I can start the transition.

All I have to do is to remind myself before the round that I won’t start the transition until I see and feel what I have described. The picture I’m looking for, combined with the self instruction that it has to be there or I can’t finish the swing, brings my focus back to the swing.

Do you want to make sure your focus is where it should be during your swing? Find a trigger picture that has to happen before you can make your transition. Then train yourself that you can’t swing until it’s right. Instead of concentrating on hitting the ball, concentrate on making sure everything is right before you pull the transition trigger….the rest of the swing will take care of itself.

When do you set the stage for the round of golf? On the way to the golf course. Think about your trigger, and decide that you will be patient no matter what situation rears its ugly head. After you do this for a while, your patience in the face of adversity will carry over to your daily life.

Teenagers Top The Leader Board At The Women’s US Open

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Determination, poise, focus and talent were abundant, as teens topped the leader board at the 2005 Women’s US Open. Younger players at the 2005 US Women’s Open gained much more than experience. They definitely made their impact as the future leaders in womens golf Michelle Wie (15), Morgan Pressel (17), Paula Creamer (18) and Brittany Lang (19) were among some of the teens competing on the course at Cherry Hills Village, CO for the coveted title of Women’s US Open champion. All three finished in the top 25 Pressel tied for the #2 spot with Brittany Lang, Creamer 19th, and Wie finished tied for the 23rd spot.

The final round on Sunday began with the winner Birdie Kim trailing third-round leaders Morgan Pressel, Karen Stupples and Michelle Wie by one shot. Approaching the 18th hole, Pressel and Kim were tied for the lead. In an instant Kim holed out of a bunker to make golf history, and shatter the hopes of 17-year-old amateur Morgan Pressel.

The teens playing in this year’s Women’s Open all displayed persistence and commitment to golf that can be envied by most players young or old. These young women are making history in more than one way. They are bringing more attention than ever before to women’s golf. They are set to break records as well as meet the challenge of competing with their male counterparts.

Can you guess what each of these young golf leaders have in common? Aside from their obvious dedication and passion for excellence, each of these players engages in regular exercise and fitness programs as a compliment to their game.
Age, lack of education or a busy schedule are no longer good excuses for neglecting your physical conditioning for golf. Join the ranks of the future leaders in a new era of golf fitness training.

How to Get out of Bunkers

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

This lesson is entitled, “How to Get out of Bunkers”, and everyone knows how frustrating they can be if you don’t know the proper mechanics to get out of them. But the bottom line is, for the pros, bunker shots are some of the easiest shots on the course.

These steps will ensure that you have the right mechanics for getting out of bunkers. Once you’ve read these steps, practice them and get used to hitting out of bunkers, and they will become just as natural as a regular short game shot. These steps will give you the solid foundation that you need for bunker success.

Here are the steps: (note: These steps apply to a normal sand bunker. Not wet or hard sand)

1. Choke down on the golf club (Have your right index finger about an inch from the bottom of the grip). Choking down gives you the control with the club and also allows you to “feel” the shot rather than hitting it.

2. Narrow your stance a little and play the ball a few inches forward in your stance. This will also aid in controlling the shot, and it will contribute to higher ball flight.

3. Dig into the sand with your feet a little and get comfortable.

4. Keep your body completely still throughout (no twisting hips).

5. Start your swing with your arms and keep your swing vertical. The end of the grip butt should be pointed at the ball at the top of your backswing. (Don’t bring the club straight back, remember steep is better here!)

6. Your left arm should be parallel to the ground and fully extended at the top of your swing.

7. Then start your downswing at the sand focusing to hit 1 inch behind the ball. Don’t focus on hitting the ball, hit the sand an inch behind and the ball will get out every time!

8. Your arms and body follow the ball as it leaves the sand.

9. Remember steep angle into the sand is key here, however you don’t have to swing too hard, we are not blasting the ball out we are advancing it.

Drill: Go into a bunker and take 3 clubs your pitching wedge, sand wedge, and a lob wedge(if you have one). Remember that you can get creative with shots; just because it’s a sand wedge doesn’t mean that you’ll “feel” the most comfortable or give you the best results. But I want you to notice the difference in design and performance.

Regardless, hit a few shots with each club and really notice the difference in how the ball comes out of the sand. Then choose the club that bests suits you. But remember on all these clubs swing steep and hit 1 inch behind the ball. You can even draw a line 1-2 inches behind the ball and aim for that line.

At home, office, or at the course take practice swings and focus on bringing the club up at a steep angle. Watch as your grip end points to the ground. And stop there – this is the position that you want to be in. A great way to see if the grip is pointed over the ball is sticking a tee in the grip handle. Do that a few times to ensure that you know where to stop the golf club and start your steep downswing. Then the downswing is easy! Just hit an inch behind the ball. Practice this for a few days then go have fun in a bunker!

Next week, we’ll discuss buried lies, and then it’s on to chipping and putting. Good golfing, until then.

Don’t Let A Golf Injury Keep You Away From The Game

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

The golf swing puts tremendous stress on the joints of the lower back, hips and even the shoulders.

As many mature golfers anticipate the opportunity to play even more golf, they are confronted with the limitations of their failing bodies.

Driven to stay in the game, many are realizing the importance of golf conditioning.

With age comes a decrease in muscle mass, range of motion, body awareness (balance) and muscular endurance.

The good news is men and women older than the age of 50 can build strength and develop muscle at the same rate as adults much younger than them, according to a 1996 study conducted by Wayne Wescott, who co-wrote, “Strength Training Past 50″.

This is the time period that can make or break your future golfing life.

You may be surprised to learn that:

* More than 60 percent of amateur golfers sustained one or more golf-related injuries over the course of their playing years.
* The above number was higher for players over the age of fifty.
* The average injury kept the amateur golfer off the course for more than five weeks.
* The highest percentage was the lower back, then the elbow, wrist, shoulder and so on.

The bottom line…take care of the most important equipment you’ve got… YOU!

Sound Waves to Causing Structural Failure to Insect Wings

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Recently a professional engineer was asked for assistance in the question if sound waves could cause structural failure in insect wings. Why? Well, because it was believed that sound waves could then be used to stop killer bees or locust plagues from swarming and causing deaths or devastation to crops. This has been discussed in an online think tank and one member approached the professional engineer and then reported back to the group;

“So basically now you have stated; I sent the story to a professional engineer friend of mine and he says the wings are so flexible that spending time trying to degrade them or crack the drum head part of the wing with sound wave seems a distant pursuit, given the other concept with which to meditate.

Well another think tank member stated to that; Obviously and I told you so. Now if you are trying to impress me with “professional engineers” I will have none of that, because this is such a blatantly obvious answer to a question, I say “No Minutia Sherlock!” For anyone to impress me well let’s just say they will have to be more than just a professional engineer, because to me that is like a professional lawyer, professional politician or professional scum scraper at the sewer treatment plant.

Glad we got that out of the way. “Professional Engineer?” Yah and these professional engineers are why nothing I ever buy ever works? Professional engineers. I think we ought to hold these professional engineers accountable for the crap they produce and design. So, what does professional mean, they wear a tie to work to impress superiors? Please spare me the BS and just because he thinks it will not work does not mean it wouldn’t when the wing of the insect is working at its structural limits in the midst of the intensity of the swarm. It just means if we continue to look at this problem we take the flexibility of the wing into consideration. So, then lets consider all this in 2006.

Purchase Discount Cricket Equipment on the Web

Friday, December 26th, 2008

When you are just starting out playing cricket it’s not always straightforward to decide what you need to obtain. If you go into a sports equipment high street retail shop and ask them what you require, you will finish up getting a great deal of gear. Hence, it is wise to clearly understand what you will need prior to you going shopping. That way you are considerably more likely to acquire what you need, as opposed to what the shop manager advises you require.

Below, is essentially an entire cricket equipment list, you don’t have to get all the goods on this list, as lots of clubs will lend you equipment particularly at junior level:

Cricket whites, cricket bats, balls, helmets, gloves, batting (wicket keeping) inner gloves, wicket keeping gloves, batting pads, wicket keeping pads, box, chest pad, arm guard, inner thigh pad, cricket boots (bowling boots; batting boots), box (groin guard), stumps and bails.

For the majority of cricket events you partake in you will need to have your own set of whites. Cricket whites include white cricket trousers & a cricket shirt. It is very important to make sure that you acquire a proper set of cricket trousers & also a nice white cricket shirt & jumper as it can easily turn pretty cold if you are standing out on the pitch for a large amount of time particularly if you intend to play in England (the start and end of the season are the coldest). Find cricket equipment online at Sportswear-Equipment.com.

If you can not borrow kit from your club the other most crucial items of equipment are a cricket bat and box. An excellent cricket bat is vital if you aim to score tons of runs and is a very personal piece of cricket equipment, spend some time choosing your bat, preferably you would be recommended to go to a sports shop & pick one up before you buy in order for you to know how it feels to hit with. (Once you know what you want you can often acquire bats on the World Wide Web much cheaper). You need a good box to defend your groin from the ball, as getting hit down below’ is extremely painful, so investing in a good box before you start is a clear must – you can not bat without one.

White Sox Are Too Technical; They’re Playing Not To Lose

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Sure, the Chicago White Sox are in first place in the Central division.

I should be happy, right?

Of course, it’s better than being in the cellar, but still I have a beef with the World Champs.

They lost the series to Seattle, winning only one in three games. That’s simply not good enough.

Seattle has some good players, and as Washburn pointed out, a little pitching. But they’re not coming off a championship season, as the Sox are.

Yet, Seattle looked just as calm, collected, and effective.

There’s something wrong with this picture.

I think if I had to characterize the Sox’s play during the Seattle series, I’d call it stiff. They weren’t loose, by any means.

There wasn’t any swagger, and as the innings passed, they just didn’t feel like a threat.

Separately, I’ve written about the public relations offensive that the Sox are waging, trying to appear to be nice guys, even to their rivals.

I say, forget about it!

Now, is the time to scrap for every victory, to gradually yet surely distance your selves from your division rivals.

They’re in first place, but it’s way too early to cruise. And as last year’s Indian surge demonstrated, you can never rest.

In other words, don’t play it safe at Safeco Park, or anywhere else!
