Setting An Example For Success One Foot At A Time

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

I was waiting for the great man to speak. He was supposed to be example of what young men who want to succeed can be. I was looking him over during his introduction. He was fashionably dressed from his suit and tie down to his shoes. It was while I was looking at his highly polished shoes I noticed the rather large hole in the sole of one of them.

I have no idea what he said during his presentation. I didn’t take notes. I do remember that people seemed to enjoy it. All I thought about while he spoke and all I can remember today is the hole in his shoe.

If he had been talking about the need for insurance, or relationships, the hole in the shoe wouldn’t have bothered me. But, he was talking about success . . . and a hole in the shoe and success don’t got hand in hand . . . or even foot in foot.

Seeing a hole in the shoe on today’s well-thought of individual speakers would be very, very rare, but a hole in the shoe doesn’t really have to be literal. If can be figurative.

I know a particular congressman. If he were to talk about family values, I would remember hearing him as he spoke condescendingly to his wife over the phone one morning. That would be his “hole in the shoe.” I know a businessman who speaks about treating his employees well and respecting their opinions. I know him well enough to know that if they said anything that differed from what he wanted to believe, they would no longer be employed by him. That character flaw is that businessman’s hole in the shoe.

Generally, you don’t even have to know people to see their hole in the shoe. Sometimes you’ll pick up on it by how they act towards people, the difference of what they say versus what they do, or statements they make which are at odds over what they’ve already said.

While not everyone is walking around with holes in their shoes, there sure seem to be a lot of them. All we can do is watch out for them, be aware of their faults, and protect our own feet.

Comparing Ancient Programs from the East to Modern Programs like Stephen Covey.

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Comparing Corporate and Personal goal attainment programs that have developed over thousands of years with those of modern day legends such as Covey – “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”

In the 1990s Stephen Covey’s name became famous through the publication of the “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. As many know the “7 habits” are not a group of new concepts but age-old approaches to success represented in a way that can be clearly applied to modern day personal and corporate development. These precepts are taught in a number of ancient development, and achievement arts, which have been practiced for thousands of years. Although many of these concepts have been lost and misinterpreted, they exist and can be translated in non-extreme forms, from such arts as: Zen (which is not a religion, but a path for self discovery and growth), the “Art of War” by Sun Tzu (the classic text on strategy which is often regarded as the most definitive text on the topic), and the Tao de Ching (the “book of change”).

Profound lessons for leadership, change, victory and non-conflict have arisen from bodies of work such as the “Art of War”, because the learnings came from life and death scenarios. Obviously today’s corporate world does not induce a mechanism for change, and success, anywhere near as strong as these ancient arts as the consequence of failure is far less. This is why groups such as the Samurai, and post-war Corporate Japan, adopted highly refined lessons from Chinese Zen and the “Art of War”. However, modern Asia is very different from its past. Today such cultures as Japan often see an environment which is one of the most materialistic and rapid success oriented cultures around, quite a contrast to its approaches of the past. Today many Western corporate cultures are now embracing past strategies to avoid conflict and gain success.

The strategy text “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu, is often incorrectly viewed as an aggressive approach to victory. However, it is essentially a master text on “Conflict Management” and “Win-Win” scenarios (“Win-Win”, habit 4 of Stephen Covey). It also discusses partnering in detail (“Synergize”, habit 6 of Stephen Covey), project planning (“begin with the end in mind”, habit 2 of Stephen Covey) and has many direct relationships to goal attainment in corporate and personal development contexts.

Partners, Competition and Internal Efficiency: Managing conflict in a modern organization has an amazing number of ties to the central themes of Zen, the “Art of War” and the book of change (Tao de Ching). They are all about understanding yourself, your organization, your strengths, weaknesses and synergizing with others to achieve positive outcomes. Collectively these things have a direct correlation to an annual company S.W.O.T review (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). Furthermore, these attributes and approaches mimic an employee’s annual performance review. In Applied Zen workshops we go through approaches to company S.W.O.T. which include: company self analysis, analyzing the competition, and partnering for best case strategic outcomes.

All the above methods (old and new) are about changing base behavior, beliefs and approaches. These are core values, and are far more important than putting band-aids on problems, or approaching things with simply a behavior change. In regard to the ancient philosophies, they of course must be interpreted, and applied, using case studies in a context that matches the modern corporate world – but the lessons are most definitely there!

Continuing to train ones skills and undergo development both in-house and outside your company is essential.

As the ancient samurai saying says: “Continually sharpen the sword or it will go blunt!”

Sleep in a Sleepless World

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Are you getting enough sleep? 47 million adults in the US aren’t. A hundred years ago, the average person slept 9 hours a night – clinically proven to be the amount most of us need. As of 2002, the average has dropped to 6.9 hours and general sleep deprivation.

We feel the need for more hours in day and the only place we seem to be able to cut time from is our sleep. We can’t afford to sacrifice our personal productivity for a few “extra” hours snooze time. What many of us don’t realize is how much damage we cause ourselves when we don’t get enough sleep.

A lack of sleep can mess around with your emotions, energy levels, memory, problem solving, speech and general mental capabilities. Sleep deprivation can cause pessimism, stress, anger and sadness – not to mention a whole slough of health problems including pre-mature aging.

So, as you can see, cutting back on your sleep to get more done actually decreases your productivity.

Now, everything gets more complicated from here. Each of us requires a different amount of sleep in order to function properly. Don’t get enough and fall prey to any number of the afore-mentioned symptoms. Get too much and become a lazy lump that lives to sleep.

It takes time and a bit of dedicated experimentation to find your optimum sleep pattern. It is not as simple as setting the alarm clock early or late one day.

You must get up at the same time and go to bed at the same time with your new sleep schedule for at least a week to allow your body to adjust.

You must do this for each time increment. Start out by adding or subtracting an hour and pinpoint from there. Your body will tell you when it’s happy.

All this is well and good – if you don’t have trouble sleeping. Unfortunately, most people (especially women) do. So what can we do to encourage the sandman? Cut back on alcohol, caffeine and nicotine and avoid them like the plague six hours before bedtime. Don’t eat or drink anything for two hours before bed – this will also help your body to burn fat instead of calories while you sleep!

Don’t fall into the clock-watching trap. If you can’t sleep, don’t lie there stressing about it – get up and do something until you get sleepy. Most importantly, relax before bed, but make sure your not in bed. Read, meditate or take our recommendation – have a hot bath with your favourite bath treat, soy candles and soothing music!

Why You Must Ensure Your School Is Correctly Accredited

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

If you are studying a common academic subject (Math,
English, or History, for example), your best bet is to make
sure that your school is accredited by one of the six
regional accrediting agencies recognized by the National
Board of Education.

These are the same agencies that grant regular public and
private universities their accreditation. Find out which
state your online program is operating from, and then look
to see what regional agency grants accreditation to that
state. The following agencies are recognized as being
legitimate:

New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)
Accredits schools in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Europe, Africa, Asia, and
the Middle East

North Central Association of Schools and Colleges (NCA)
Accredits schools in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois,
Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri,
Navajo Nation, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio,
Oklahoma, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and
Wyoming

Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA)
Accredits schools in Delaware, District of Columbia,
Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico,
US Virgin Islands, Central America, Europe, and the Middle
East

Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS)
Accredits schools in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky,
Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Latin America

Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)
Accredits schools in California, Hawaii, Guam, American
Samoa, Palau, Micronesia, Northern Marianas, Marshall
Islands, and other Australasian locations

Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NWCCU)
Accredits schools in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada,
Oregon, Utah, and Washington

If you earn a degree from an online school that is
accredited by one of these associations, you can be assured
that it will be as valid as a degree from any regular
university. Most employers will automatically accept your
degree.

If you are pursing a degree in an academic subject and the
school of your choice is not accredited by one of these
institutions, you may want to consider switching schools.

The Property Index — Your Prodigious Cosmopolitan Property Platform

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

There are a range of properties in America for sale on Property Index, from villas to apartments.

Even if PropertyIndex.com is actually a recent concern, (they were incorporated only in March 2007), they were very quick to gain in reputation. De facto, they are a rather hassle-free concern entirely concentrated on offering informed instructions to every customer who is designing to rent, buy, etc. real estate in a globalized world. Their assurance: to help you hit upon exactly what you require very quickly and, further, sans pain. Real estate can be bought all over the world now, one of the high-class areas being property you can purchase in the United States. It’s no big challenge to pinpoint all the terrific property available in the United States, the reason for investigating land here is property available and the glorious chance of being able to live with this optimistic and pulsating population.

It’s one of the truly well-liked property markets now, and with the gorgeous landscape and agreeable weather surrounding you here, how could you be wrong? Real estate in the United States is very rich in history and culture, this area of the world has a long tradition as a home to a good number of nations. Just 30 years back there’d be merely a trickle of British people looking for property in the United States. Ask any individual who has removed to the United States and they will tell you the same thing. There are those who would will view it as a passing vogue and others will view it as a that’s nearly a compulsion… Buyers who will repair over here will typically range from young couples keen on a new challenge in life to older generations who are looking to enjoy themselves and slow down.

There might be complications when buying property in a foreign country: expectably there’ll be 100s of heterogeneous, not always very logical, procedures when organising, touring or completing. Even if one single action is missed this is sure to well initiate far-reaching complications plus, critically, financial loss. As you would assume with this sought after place, property may be pricey in this destination and this, of course, is just due to the broad market pressure. In spite of this the homebuyer is quite spoilt in a part of the world so determined by cheerful terrain and good vista. It truly has the whole thing just about anyone might possibly covet and more.
