Is New York City Rigging Their Parking Meters?

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

For immediate release…

“Parking Expert” Erik Feder gets a NYC parking ticket – on
purpose!

Is it possible that the City has rigged some kind of system that
detects when a motorist has left their car at a meter without
paying?
Many readers of PARKAZINE (“Parking Expert” Erik Feder’s
free NYC parking e-newsletter) complain about how fast NYC police and
traffic officers write parking tickets – especially at parking meters. These
drivers lament the fact that they only left their cars for a minute and
BANG! – there was a parking ticket on the windshield.

The experiment: The Parking Expert tries it for himself

After getting dozens of emails complaining about this type of thing, Erik
figured that either A.) People were exaggerating and they were really
gone a lot longer than a minute or B.) Something funny is going on. With
that in mind, he decided to conduct a little experiment. Feder parked at
a meter on 2nd Ave in Manhattan, didn’t put money in the meter,
started his stopwatch and ducked into a pizzeria. With no police or
traffic officers in sight; the “Parking Expert” decided he’d wait up to 10
minutes and leave if he didn’t get a ticket.

The result: Faster than you can say “Except Sunday”

The first minute passed uneventfully. Suddenly, a police car zoomed up
and stopped alongside Erik’s car. The officer sat there for a few
seconds, hopped out, slapped a ticket on the windshield and sped
away. The time on Feder’s stopwatch: 93 seconds!

Coincidence? While some may think so, the “Parking Expert” is skeptical.
As for the parking ticket, of course he was planning to pay it, but even
though the ticket was created with one of those new hand-held
computers, the time of issuance, date of offense, parking meter # and
parking ticket # are all either missing or illegible. You KNOW that Feder
is fighting this one!

Buying Property in Spain

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

You have made the decision to move to Spain and are now looking for a property to buy? Where do you start?

Firstly, I would suggest you go on to the internet and look at the various agents that are offering properties for sale in Spain. Many of these companies are run by people who have already emigrated to Spain and will know the many problems and pitfalls that arise when buying a property in Spain.

The next step is decide where you want to live, is it in a Town (urbanization), the Country (campo) even the mountains, the lakes or the Coast. If you want everything close at hand to you, then your best bet would be look at properties in a Town or on the Coast especially if you require medical facilities close at hand. You then need to decide whether you want to buy an apartment, townhouse, villa, finca (country house with land) or a property that needs renovation.

You have now made a decision on where you want to live and what sort of property you want to buy. It is now time to start contacting the agents, both those on the internet and those who are located in the town close to where you wish to live. They will not only provide you with the details of properties they feel would be of interest to you, but they should also be able to provide you with details regarding solicitors, banks (if you may need a mortgage to purchase the property), schools, medical facilities in that area. If possible get the bank to confirm with you what sort of percentage of monies they would lend on the purchase of a property, most banks in Spain only provide 75% mortgages.

You have now found the property of your dreams, one of the first things that you should ask of your agent is does the owner of the property have the right to sell the property and if so can they produce the papers confirming this. If no such document is available, then ask if they will be drawn up before the sale. If not, then do not proceed with the purchase.

Also ask your agent if they can confirm that the property being sold has been provided with all the correct planning permissions by the Local Town Hall. If you find that the property has not been provided with the correct planning permissions by the Town Hall, this may mean that the property has been built illegally. At present the Government in Spain is now starting to enforce the laws regarding illegal builds and this has sometimes resulted in properties being demolished and large fines incurred by the developers.

However, the problem above is only a minor one, and as long as you find yourself a reputable agent to help you in your task of finding the property of your dreams then these above problems should be of no consequence to you.

I hope that the information provide aboves helps you in make your decision to purchase a property in Spain a pleasant one.

ANSWERS

Question 1
A=10, B=8, C=6, D=4, E=2
Open two-way communication sums up a positive team atmosphere. Everyone feel comfortable sharing feelings with others because they know their positions are important; their thoughts heard, and feelings considered.

Question 2
A=4, B=10, C=2, D=8, E=6
Team members are free to take reasonable risks and to experiment with ideas. There are no failures only opportunities of growth and learning. A self-managing team does not place blame, but has a norm of individual responsibility and initiative. Team members understand that good “followership” means accepting responsibility. They take the initiative to influence other team members and the team’s direction.

Question 3
A=10, B=8, C=6, D=4, E=2
When trust is lacking, members protect themselves from other team members through political maneuvering and partisanship. Deception and infighting, not cooperation and honest communication, are the acceptable behaviors.

Question 4
A=2, B=4, C=6, D=8, E=10
The team has a “we-ness” attitude. They work for a common and understood goal. They are willing to subordinate “I” need for the “we”. They think in terms of team gains and do not exhibit competition between team members.

Question 5
A=2, B=4, C=6, D=8, E=10
Differences of opinions and conflicts are suppressed. Those who withhold information will hide behind, “If you can’t say anything constructive, don’t say anything at all” attitude. Contrast this to a positive team atmosphere where conflicts and differences are openly discussed. The team will not seek a winner or looser but to use conflict to benefit the communication and problem solving process in the team. Effective teams will use to their advantage and will not shy away from conflict.

Question 6
A=6, B=10, C=8, D=2, E=4
The team members feel that they are valuable to the team. As a result, they do not have to compete for air time. An attitude that everyone’s opinions and views need to be seriously considered exists. Everyone, including those who are not the top performer are given time to express their views and the opportunity to influence the team.

Question 7
A=10, B=2, C=6, D= 4, E=8
Team members will put up a faade in an untrusting, non-supportive environment. They feel that letting people know who they really are would result in them being vulnerable and hurt. In a positive team atmosphere, differences are seen as strengths, not weaknesses. Members feel differences between people need to be understood; and all need to be accepted as assets for better team building performance.

Question 8
A=10, B=8, C=6, D=4, E=2
A willingness to take risks, express opinions, and venture new or different ideas is typical of a supportive atmosphere. Team members feel they are listened to and not belittled for openly expressing their viewpoints. Placing blame and criticizing is not part of the effective team’s atmosphere.

Question 9
A=2, B=4, C=6, D=8, E=10
Hidden agendas and posturing for power are the rules in a team that has a poor atmosphere. Honest discussion of needs, expectations, and goals leads to increased team building and teamwork.

Question 10
A=10, B=6, C=8, D=4, E=2
The foundation for a high quality team atmosphere is trust. Without it, some teams never develop to operate beyond a level of a committee or a ask force group. These team members are concerned with issues of power, authority, competition for attention, and political maneuvering; not in establishing a cohesive and effective team.

Your Team Building Score

80-100- Great News! You have a healthy team atmosphere. It is conducive to achieving great results. Your team can spend their time performing the work of the team, productively establishing goals, procedures, processes, and clarifying team members roles, i.e. Since atmosphere can change, you should periodically test the temperature of the atmosphere, to see if inhibiting issues or concerns in the maintenance of this productive atmosphere are openly discussed and dealt with.

60-79- On the surface, your team is healthy and productive. However, a few key areas keep this team from developing to its full potential. If not addressed, these areas will fester and create debilitating problems. Now is the time to bring these into the open, then work with your team to establish ways to improve.

Below 60-You are not a team but a group of people. Individuality reigns supreme, and there is very little sense of cohesiveness. This could be because you are a new team, or one that has never openly and candidly discussed how you work, or don’t work together as a team. A more formal approach to team building can help your group get over this stage in their development. Ignoring the problems will not make them go away. To become an effective team will require a pro-active approach from both the team leader and members.

Grieving the End of Your Marriage, as You Know it

Friday, June 13th, 2008

The pain of finding out that your partner is cheating on you can be the worst pain you’ll feel in your entire life. What is happening to you, you may wonder. You are grieving. You are grieving the loss of your marriage as you know it, of the spouse as you knew him or her. You know that although you may heal that nothing will ever be exactly the same.

This is just what happens when you lose someone in death. What can you do to make the pain go away?

Understand what grief is! Understand the stages of grief!

Grief is defined as the emotional depiction of great loss accompanied by a sense of hopelessness, anguish, denial, anger and confusion.

The stages of grief are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

How each stage feels to you is going to be different than how it feels to another person. Also, the length of time you spend in each phase will differ.

The first stage is denial. When talking about a relationship afflicted by infidelity this stage is usually gone through before you even find out about the affair. You see signs and you ignore them, thinking your partner couldn’t possibly have an affair. You basically deny that the warning signs are there. If you found out about the affair suddenly or were ambushed with it then you may also experience denial. This is usually the case when someone comes to you and says that you’re partner is having an affair and you say that they are not, they couldn’t possibly be.

The next stage is anger. You will be angry! You have every right to be angry! Anger will take many forms and you will be angry at many people. I personally had moments when I was outright ANGRY and he knew it and other moments when I was passive aggressive. I was also angry at a lot of people. I was angry with him for having the affair, I was angry with the other woman, I was angry with all his coworkers that knew about the affair, I was even angry at his parents. Anger can be the hardest phase to get out of. For many
people, staying angry is a lot easier than feeling the pain. I would start to hurt when thinking about it and I would then go straight into anger because being angry was easier than feeling the pain.

If your spouse has left you or is going to leave you, you may start bargaining. Bargaining is when you beg. Please don’t leave us, what will we do with out you. How will we make it. These are all words of the person who is bargaining.

Depression is the next stage. I think that pretty much everyone knows what depression is and knows how it relates to infidelity.

And finally there is acceptance. You have accepted that it happened, that you can’t change that it happened, you are no longer stuck on the WHY and you can finally move towards the future, either with your mate or without.

No one person travels through the stages of grief the same. You do not have to go through the stages in order, nor do you have to go through each phase. What matters is that you find a way to get to acceptance.

If you have decided to leave your relationship because you just can’t handle what he/she did to you, I must caution you. You will still feel grief. You will still go through the stages of grief. It is important to get through the stages before beginning another
relationship.

You should start doing some things for yourself! When you are grieving it is all too easy to let yourself go. Do not do this. Eat, get sleep, exercise.

Many people find it therapeutic to start doing things for themselves that they didn’t do before they found out about the affair. They will join a gym, go on a diet, and develop new friends. Any number of things that ultimately lead to you feeling better about yourself.

Take the time to do something nice for yourself today!

Salespeople Stop Looking For The Lesson In Rejection!

Friday, June 13th, 2008

You’ve heard the adage, that as a nation, if we don’t learn from history, we’re doomed to repeat it.

You’ve probably thought that this also applies to our mistakes, as individuals.

Perhaps, but rejection isn’t always a mistake that salespeople can learn from.

In a perfect selling situation, we’d get great feedback. We’d learn why each prospect declined, and what they chose to do, instead; including nothing.

Also, we’d learn why we succeeded; which is something we rarely ask. Why look a gift horse in the mouth, right?

But we might have been lucky, or perhaps our marketing and selling strategies are working perfectly. Without feedback, we don’t know what to continue and what to abandon.

Still, rejection often has no lessons to teach.

For instance, what if as buyer just doesn’t like you; you remind him of his coach who threw him off the basket weaving team. Even if he were consciously aware of his reason for rejecting you, what good would it do you to hear it?

Could you argue with him that his childhood experience should not reflect on you?

Would you resolve to never deal with him, again? You probably don’t have to; he’ll do the avoiding for you.

Rejection is an atmospheric condition endemic to selling. Like the air we breathe, it may be invisible to us, or if it’s smoggy, all too visible; but it’s always there.

And like the weather, we can gripe about it, but we can’t change it.

Growing up in Chicago, I learned to lean into the oncoming wind. Sooner or later I made it to my destination, and it made me stronger, especially if I didn’t make a big deal out of it, and just stayed on course.

“Through wisdom is a house built. And by understanding it is established. And by knowledge shall every room be filled with precious and pleasant riches!” –Bible

Always do your very own homework …
The more you know, the better off you will always be! This requires that you keep educating yourself, and pay attention to all possible events that might affect you.

Understand personal finance matters that could affect you. Understand how each of your investments fits in with the rest of your portfolio and with your overall strategy. Understand the risks associated with each investment.

Gather unbiased and objective information. Get a second opinion, a third opinion, etc. Be cautious when evaluating the advice of anyone with a vested interest.

If you’re going to invest in stocks, learn as much as you can about the companies you’re considering.

Understand before you invest!

Research, research, research!

Read Books and educate yourself!

Experiment with various strategies before you put your own money on the line. Examine all available historical data. Try fundamental analysis, try a technical analysis portfolio, a dividend portfolio, a price/earnings growth portfolio, and any others you might think of. In the process you’ll find out which ones work best for you.

Learn from your own mistakes …

But mostly try to learn from the mistakes of others.

Web Hosting 101

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

The Internet is probably one of the most valuable tools of communication that man has ever invented in the last decade. Since time immemorial, man has been constantly in communication with the world around him. From his dear relatives, to his favored peers, and even with the environment that he lives in. And this would not be possible without the people equipped with the knowledge of web hosting.

Because of this, man is in perpetual communication. Since then communication has always been associated with the words time and urgency. This was true because the time element in delivering the post was crucial especially during the great American Civil War. Responses were held at a minimum of two weeks for the replenishment of arms and men, and the element of time was always taken into consideration.

And because of this need, man further developed and pushed forward with the ultimate goal of delivering messages at the fastest time possible. Through the hardened effort of the people inside and outside the field of communication various ways of reaching people and places were invented and discovered throughout the development of the modern society.
